The Department of Creative Athletics: An Installation at the SAIC Spring Student Art Sale

A collaboration with Abbey Odunlami

April 2013

School of the Art Institute of Chicago Spring Student Art Sale

An installtion in the SAIC Spring Student Art Sale, The Department of Creative Athletics was an interactive performance piece in the guise of a merchandise booth. The installation and performance suggested to viewers that the booth and caretakers of the booth supported a mythological athletic department for the School of the Art Institute, The Department of Creative Athletics. The booth featured stickers with official logos and silk screened T-shirts with a mythological mascot "Sal the Exquisite Corpse" who supports the school's team "The Abstract Expressionists". The booth also featured "signed posters" from the school's "football captain", cheers, and all-star photographs of the school's top athelete. At noon, a pep rally was led to build school spirit.

An exploration of community, school spirit and communication/miscommunication, The Department of Creative Athletics suggests relationships between community support and togetherness created through sports teams, a theme dominant in the city of Chicago.
