The Museum
of Everyday Alchemy
About
What is gained and lost in processes of acculturation, appropriation, assimilation, and hybridization? The Museum of Everyday Alchemy suggests visual hybridization as a process of meaning making and representation, pulling from mixed metaphor and iconography, stories your auntie’s friend told you, traditions you don’t know where they came from, making it up as you go along and doing with what you have.
What amount of imagination/yearning/honor/tragedy/addition/elimination shapes the stories of who we are and where we came from? This, layered with overwhelming loss, are our objects alters or artifacts?

The museum is in my imagination.
The objects are currently on display at Disjecta Contemporary Art Center. Please see the Disjecta website for viewing hours: https://www.disjecta.org/
These objects were made with scrap and discarded materials.
This project was created during a residency with GLEAN Portland. Thank you to the supporters and jurors for the opportunity. Thank you to Portland Metro, Crackedpots, and Recology. GLEAN is a juried art program that taps into the creativity of artists to inspire people to think about their consumption habits, the waste they generate and the resources they throw away.
